The Comboni Missionaries serve this predominately African American community of St. Martin de Porres, a parish of the Archdiocese of Chicago and located in the Austin neighborhood on the west side of Chicago. St. Martin de Porres Parish has evolved over the years, welcoming parishioners previously belonging to no-longer-existing parishes.
The parish community is committed and devoted to reaching out to the surrounding community through a number of programs and service-based groups,

Parish family life is the focal point at St. Martin de Porres and the spirit of welcome is a strong characteristic of the parish community. We strive to work together, forming a warm, hospitable, family where all are invited to join in. We believe that we cannot share our experience of the Lord and spread the Gospel unless our neighbor can say of us what was said of the earliest Christians: “See how they love one another!”

The Comboni Missionaries minister to the youth of the neighborhood in a special way, at The Peace Corner, a drop in center located one block from the parish. Through the Peace Corner we strive to create a sense of belonging and community as an alternative to street life and the lure of gang membership. We offer a number of programs to help instill self-esteem and the pride of accomplishment, from tutoring and support groups to employment skills training and legal council.
